Terminated: Inquisition Army Lot

24 Feb 2015
This has all been sold. The buyer(s) were happy with the lots and I wish them all the best. Perhaps one day I will give the Inquisition another go, but time is not infinite and my Red Scorpions need my love. So long Inquisition, it's been fun!

Terminated: Deathwatch Army

29 Dec 2014
This was an awesome army that never made it to the paint table on account of a massive project task list with higher priority items. Still, it was a great build with lots of lessons learned.

Photo Tutorial: Scratch building hostile forest terrain (Complete!)

Went on a bit of a boxing day spree at Michaels and decided to push up my plans for my first scratch-built terrain piece: a hostile forest. Hobbyists know that passion and energy drive any project. I've done enough grinds to know that you should never ignore an impulse when it pops up. So taking this advice I embarked on a mysterious journey using a bunch of new materials and improvised techniques.

The project and this tutorial log are now complete! Took a long time since I was not on a schedule, but was really fun overall.

Salvage/Conversion: Grey Knights Dreadnoughts

11 Nov 2014
Three dreadnoughts I put together this year either through salvage or conversion. I put some extra love into the bases and gave the two Forge World dreads some magnetized hood ornaments to make them venerable. The TL auto-cannons were bought either direct from FW or through local trades. They are all magnetized for my swapping pleasure. Pretty simple project, but should be a fun one to paint.

Conversion/In Progress: Emil Darkhammer & the Inquisition

11 Nov 2014
Small update on Emil Darkhammer primed and paint ready. I'm in the process of listing my warbands and a few Inquisitors so I've deleted most of the related posts. This and the sales post will be the only things up for a while until I figure out the next steps for that army.

Salvage: Red Scorpions Tank Squadron

Nov 11 2014
This is a refurbished Space Marine Razorback I bought last winter. I thought it was a Predator but the Instagram crowd soon corrected me. Shows what a young blood I still am sometimes. Anyway, I'll be moving this with the Predator below in my Red Scorpions army. Will even count it as a Predator from time to time.

Terrain: Imperial Strongpoint

01 Nov 2014
Picked up this new on sprue boxset at a great price. It's a nice addition to my heavily WIP home table, which until now contained only ruins and buildings. Only a few things of note to mention. I went with a two tone primer scheme due to some rationing. I also decided to not fully glue all the floors and keep it modular because life.

Malifaux Crews: First Class

14 May 2014
Not going to go into great detail on this right now. Only to say that these plastic Malifaux 1.5E and 2E minis were fun to assemble. I pinned all the models away from the bases and did extra build detailing on each base. I figured that since Malifaux uses so few models compared to Warhammer I might as well make each one as nice as possible.

Tutorial: The ULTIMATE miniature stripping challenge!

A long hiatus from posting over. Non-stop work continues in the background. Now it is finally time to answer the age old question: Which popular hobby paint removal solution is truly the greatest?

Community: Port Wander's narrative warfare

If it seems like I've dropped off the face of the Earth it's only because my Deathwatch salvage project of two squads exploded into a 50-odd model contingent. Those of you who follow me on Instagram will no doubt be privy to the gory details. Well, I'm happy to say that by tomorrow night (at the latest) I will have completed converting every single infantry model I own. That is another very significant milestone and one which brings me closer to the ultimate paint marathon for 2014.

Back to this post. In the course of regular local trade I met a fellow gamer who is running refresher 40K games with his group. Since they are (re)learning the 6th Edition rules, the games will be story driven and smaller in size. He's posted the first narrative battle report to chronicle this exciting campaign. The fanfic fluff is extremely well written and I found the whole thing very entertaining. I truly can't wait to get my Red Scorpions in there to kick some shiny metal ass.

Only one question now remains: who will prevail? Will it be the troubled Reclusiarch Luther of the Black Templar Space Marines? Or will the Necron menace of Sumnal further their mysterious objectives? Visit Sumnal: A Warhammer 40,000 Narrative Campaign (PORT WANDER) for the battle report.

Terrain: Imperial City

05 Jan 2014
Big milestone complete and a timely wrap up on a very productive hobby holiday break. I'll let the pictures do most of the talking since "I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep". I plan on detailing and weathering the buildings, but not for a while. Hard part's done.

Now live on Instagram!

Credit where credit is due. My friend Erica (who beyond being a well of good ideas, will one day take over the marketing industry) suggested I head on over to Instagram and make myself an account.

Now I am by no means a luddite, but truth be told I tend to avoid the modern "conveniences" of social networking. I cancelled my Facebook account a while back, I didn't really understand Instagram until recently and Twitter just plain scares me.

And yet, Studio Hobby Thumbs now has a second couch to crash on: http://instagram.com/studiohobbythumbs/. The things I do for my readers...
